About the event
Every year organisations and communities around the world come together to raise awareness of how we can create a world where fewer people die by suicide.
Join our session to hear from those affected by suicide, where negative turned to positive and what we can do to help
Speakers include
Heather Barker, Samaritans
In an emergency the citizen turns to the telephone and dials 999. There ought to be an emergency number for suicidal people, I thought - Chad Varah, founder of Samaritans
The latest suicides statistics showed that in 2018, in the UK and Republic of Ireland, more than 6,800 people died by suicide. Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy. And we know that suicide is preventable, it’s not inevitable.
But not being okay is still widely stigmatised. And governments can still make better, more ambitious plans to prevent suicide. Every 10 seconds, Samaritans responds to a call for help.
Hear about how the Samaritans offer listening and support to people and communities in times of need and the tireless campaigning to make suicide prevention a priority
Andrew Bellerby, Managing Director, Solibri
Andrew will talk about his experiences as a parent with a young daughter growing up with mental health issues through her teen years.
Many of the messages will also be relevant to the workplace, signs to look out for, the importance of talking and being inclusive.
There can also be happy endings too, it is possible for people to turn their life around and learn to manage and live with mental health and become a beacon of hope for others.
